as soon as we get through the fiscal cliff -- the hope is we would replace the fiscal cliff with real policies that would keep us from going over it. now looks as though we're not going to be able to do anything to tackle the challenges right now. the partisan environment is getting worse and worse. that leaves us with questions about whether these guys can govern. host: front page of "the new york times." let me read a few points. "more difficult to reach a compromise." guest: that is absolutely true. i feel we're watching a game of finger-pointing and not much else. both sides are pointing fingers and shouting it is the other guy's fault. what if any other business environment worked this way instead of solving the problems and working together? the toxic environment calls into question when we of challenges or other important issues -- can the american political system step up and deal with it? the answer is not very well. we feel saddened and disappointed by our ability to rise to the challenge of fixing the problems. host: some of that is aimed at you. you come up in this column

fiscal cliff. we're talking about here words that are banished. lake superior university puts out a list of banished words this year. numbers one and two this year are fiscal cliff and kick the can down the road. now, regardless of today's outcome is the damage already done for congress? whether they come up with a small deal or not here when it comes to the american people, they've already decided congress is useless. >> well, i think those of us who tried to function over the last couple years in congress have been saying that. we can't figure out who even the 10%, who support congress, are. we are totally dysfunctional right now and this is just probably the worst example of it. you know, i heard speaker boehner say a number of times that he doesn't believe in compromise and a lot of republicans say the same thing. they say let's find common ground and act on that. well, there just isn't much common ground. if, in fact, the numbers we're hearing about the senate deal, whether $450,000 threshold or $550,000, that is not a matter of principle. th

buff to understand what the fiscal cliff is. you have to understand that the president is telling you that it's a cliff and it's bad and everybody on television thinks, it's terrible to go over the cliff. what is the cloy in taxes going up b you if it's bad for taxes to go up for a bunch of people, why is it good for taxes to go up only on a smarl portion of people? you said, with they're rich, they can afford it. here's the problem. the rich pay most of the taxes in our country. the tap 2% pay half of the taxes so what you're saying is, they're rich and they can absorb it. but that's half of the nation's income will have increased taxes. you will take money from the productive sector, which is the private sector, and you will put it into the nonproductive sector, which is washington. so if you want ditching to dug and then to be filled up again, send more money to washington. but if you want jobs to be created, if you want the economy to thrive, you should want to leave that money in your community. it shouldn't matter to you w
